Who we are

The Wayne County Democratic Party has been electing Democrats here since 1828. We’re volunteer-run, open to everyone, and here to build a stronger community.

The Mission of the Wayne County Democratic Party is to recruit, nominate, support and elect qualified Democratic candidates to public office. To that end, the WCDP is committed to public and governmental policies that encourage, promote and advance the shared values, principles and traditions of our Party.

Six things we hold to, from the party’s own statement of beliefs.

    Individual, political, economic and religious freedom.

    Equal opportunity and equal protection under law for all.

    Mutual respect, tolerance and respect for diversity.

  4. Good government

    Openness, competence, fiscal responsibility, integrity and ethical conduct in government.

  5. Stewardship

    Protection and responsible use of our environment and community resources.

  6. Quality of life

    A decent quality of life for all.
Since 1828

Our story

  1. The roots

    The Democratic Party is the oldest political party in the United States. It traces its roots to 1792 and the followers of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

  2. Wayne County shows up

    Supporters of Andrew Jackson establish the Democratic Party. One of them, Benjamin Jones (a Wayne County commissioner, state representative and senator), sponsors the first of our annual Democratic dinners to back Jackson’s campaign in this county. The dinner tradition he started still runs.

  3. The record keeps

    Every party chair from 1926 on is named in our history, along with the volunteers honored each year for carrying the work.

Membership

An open party

Membership is open to all who want to support the party and be known as Democrats.
Discrimination in the conduct of party affairs on the basis of sex, race, age, color, creed, national origin, religion, economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnic identity or physical disability is prohibited, so that the Democratic Party at every level is an open party.
