About

Why we’re Democrats

No slogans. What we believe, what Democratic representation has delivered, and where the parties differ, in plain terms.
The short answer

What being a Democrat means here

We believe everyone in Wayne County deserves a fair shot. That’s the short version of what we believe. Being a Democrat is what working toward it looks like in practice: in Columbus and Washington, and right here at the county level, where most of daily life actually runs.

A fair shot means
  • The freedom to live your own life
  • Rules that treat everyone the same
  • A community that doesn’t leave people behind
The record

What Democratic representation has delivered

Programs and protections Democrats wrote and passed. Most are so woven into daily life that it’s easy to forget each one started as a fight.
  1. Work and wages

The Fair Labor Standards Act, the minimum wage, the 8-hour day and 40-hour week, overtime pay, and the child labor laws.
  2. Health care and retirement

Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and the Family & Medical Leave Act.
  3. Civil rights

The Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, women’s right to vote, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Pay Act, and the Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
  4. Education

Free public schools, the GI Bill of Rights, Pell Grants, and student loan reform.
  5. Farms, food and safety

The Federal Farm Loan Act, and the laws that keep food, drugs, air and water safe.
  6. Economic recovery

The American Reinvestment & Recovery Act, the American Rescue Plan Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act.
Priorities

Where the parties differ, in plain terms

Both parties say they stand for working people. The difference shows up in what each one spends its effort on. Democrats keep working to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, to raise wages, and to make voting easier for every eligible citizen. In recent years the other party’s priorities have run the other way: tax cuts that mostly reach the wealthiest, and rules that make voting harder rather than easier.
We’d rather be judged on the record above than on a slogan.
